How to do Ping Test on a Windows 10 PC

Suppose someone wants to test the computer connectivity. Then, check the quality of the internet connection. All one needs is to do is to perform a ping test.

Suppose one is experiencing a connectivity issue. One will tell if this is limited to the local network to the home or for office setup.

Suppose the problem goes beyond the internet service provider. Then, host network or a particular website. Here is how to do a ping test on a Windows 10 PC how to read the results.

Note: If one wants to know how to do a ping test on a Mac computer. Check out the step-by-step guide here.

What is a Ping Test?

A ping test has been using to measure the latency. It tells one the quality of the connection essential to has a low manifest connection for online gaming. It is loading the web pages quickly, Video chatting, and lots more.

When one does a ping test, the computer sends a small packet of data to the host: a web domain or any other network device.

The results will show someone how fast the computer is getting a pong response back in the milliseconds. One wants the ping response time to as low as possible.

How to do Ping test on Windows 10 PC

For doing a ping test in Windows 10, open the Windows Search Bar, type CMD, and click on Open. In the Command cause, type ping followed by a space. Then the IP address or domain name one wants to test and hit the button Enter.

Open the Windows Search Bar. One can do this by clicking the appear larger glass icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, then type CMD into the search bar and click open.

It will open the Command Prompt window with a black background, white text, and a flashing cursor.

Type ping followed by a space. An IP address or domain name. For example, one would enter the ping number 192.168.1.1 or ping hellotech.com.

If one wants to ping the router, check out our guide on finding the router’s IP address.

Finally, hit Enter button on the keyboard to wait for the ping test results.

How to Read the Ping Test Results

When one does a ping test on a Windows 10 computer, one will see the results for four different ping tests. Each test will tell one the ping time in milliseconds. How many packets were received or lost?

One will also see the Minimum, Maximum, and average ping response times.

Suppose one of the ping tests appeared that packets were lost or one ping response took a lot longer than the others. Then it could be a sign that there is a problem with the connection.

Suppose one is doing a ping test to check the internet connection. One can ping Google’s DNS servers by entering the ping numbers 8.8.8.8. It will tell one if there is a problem with the internet connection, rather than just connecting to a particular site.

To see the continuous ping results. One can add the command with “-t.” For example, one can enter the numbers ping 8.8.8.8 -t to see if the connection to Google’s DNS servers has ever timed out.

Then, to stop the test, and just hit the Control + C keys on the keyboard simultaneously.

The Common Ping Error Messages

Here are the most common error messages one will see if the ping test returned to failed results:

The Request timed out

It means the ping test took no longer than the default limit of about 4,000 milliseconds, that is, 4 seconds. Network problems could cause a firewall set to stop the particular Traffic, Defective cables or Ports, and more.

The Unknown host

This error message means that the requested hostname is not identifying. Check that the name is entering correctly that the router is functioning the perfect way if one is having problems with the router. Check out the guide on how to reset the router here.

TTL expired in transit

The TTL one sees after the ping time for each test means the number of hops packet is allowed to make before getting rid of, so this error message means that the packet exceeding the maximum number of allowable hops.

General failure

It either means the computer does not have the proper TCP/IP settings. And that there might be a problem with the local area network (LAN) adapter or drivers. Like the router or WiFi card.

<destination> is unreachable:

This message means there is no route to the destination. If the message says, “Reply from <destination>: then Destination Host Unreachable. It means that there was a routing problem at the remote router. Not with the <destination> itself.

Suppose one sees one of these error messages. Then one might need to troubleshoot the network issues. One can try to ping other devices or other domains to see if the problem exists.

It will help one to determine whether the problem is with the device with the network connection.

Now that one knows how to do a ping test read the results, and find out more about the internet connection by just checking out—the step-by-step guide on testing the WiFi speed.
