National Award-Winning Actress Uttara Baokar Passes Away At 79

After a lengthy illness, renowned actress Uttara Baokar passed away at 79 years old in a hospital in Pune on Tuesday morning. According to family members, the actress and theatre artist passed away on Tuesday, and her final rites were performed the following morning on Wednesday morning.

Her career, which spanned more than fifty years, rose to fame due to her performance in Govind Nihlani’s Tamas.

She is also known for a number of other movies such as Doghi, Thakshak, Sardari Begum, The Burning Season, Uttarayan Ki Haveli and Ek Din Achanak by Mrinal Sen.

She has guest starred on many popular television programs such as Rishtey, Jabb Love Hua, Kashmakash Zindagi Ki and Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin.

The actress was renowned in the theatre world and featured in several notable productions, such as Mukyhamantri, Mena Gurjari, Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq and Umrao Jaan (in which she played the title character).

Additionally, she received training in Neurosensory Dissociation Disorders (NSDs).

Baokar earned two National Awards for her role as Ek Din Achanak’s protagonist, Mrinal Sen’s Ek Din Achanak. Additionally, in 1984 she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Director Sunil Sukthankar described her as a “disciplined performer,” noting her no-nonsense attitude while on set.
