‘Downton Abbey’ Cast Then and Now

1. Michelle Dockery as Mary Talbot

When Downton Abbey first aired in 2010, Michelle Dockery played Lady Mary Talbot and joined the original cast. She received nominations for three consecutive Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award during the course of the six seasons of the show.

Since the 2015 season finale, Dockery has made appearances on the TNT series Good Behavior, the Netflix series Godless (for which she received her fourth Emmy nomination), and the Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob.

In Downton Abbey: A New Era, the follow-up to the 2019 film Downton Abbey, she is now repeating her role as the eldest daughter of Robert the Earl of Grantham and Cora Crawley.

2. Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley

On the original series, Hugh Bonneville portrayed Robert Crawley, the 7th Earl of Grantham. He received three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two straight Emmy nominations for his work on the show.

Since then, Bonneville has acted in the 2017 film Breathe with Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, as well as the 2014 film Paddington and its 2018 follow-up.

In the 2019 Downton Abbey movie, he made a comeback as Robert Crawley, and he’ll do it again in the New Era sequel.

3. Maggie Smith as Violet Crawley

7. Phyllis Logan as Elsie Carson

When the first season of Downton Abbey debuted in 2010, Phyllis Logan became a part of the original cast as Elsie Carson.

Logan has appeared in shows and movies like Bones, Doctor Who, and The Adventures of Paddington since the 2015 series finale.

Later, she returned to the character of Elsie Carson in the 2019 Downton Abbey movie, and she will do so once more in the 2022 New Era sequel.

8. Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates

As head housemaid Anna Bates, Joanne Froggatt joined the original Downton Abbey ensemble when the program initially aired in 2010. For her performance in the category of outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, she was nominated for three Emmy Awards.

Prior to her tenure on Downton Abbey, Froggatt had more than ten years of professional acting experience. The series’ conclusion in 2015 helped enhance her rise to fame.

She has now won TV and movie roles, including the 2017 drama Mary Shelley with Elle Fanning, and has portrayed Wendy on Bob the Builder for a number of years.

9. Penelope Wilton as Isobel Grey

10. Brendan Coyle as John Bates

When Downton Abbey originally aired in 2010, Brendan Coyle joined the cast as John Bates. In 2012, he received an Emmy nomination for his performance in the category of best supporting actor.

Coyle has made a few TV and movie appearances since the series ended in 2015, but he had a successful stage career before that, earning an Olivier Award for his performance in The Weir in 1999.

Additionally, he was chosen to reprise the part of John Bates in the 2019 Downton Abbey movie and will do so once more in the 2022 follow-up.

11. Robert James-Collier as Thomas Barrow

As Thomas Barrow, a footman, Robert James-Collier joined the original Downton Abbey ensemble when the program debuted in 2010. The actor had previously landed a job on Coronation Street, and this was one of his first big parts.

After the show ended, James-Collier made appearances in TV and movie projects like 2016’s The Level and 2017’s The Ritual.

He will return to the part of Thomas Barrow in the 2022 prequel to the 2019 Downton Abbey movie.

12. Sophie McShera as Daisy Parker

On the show, Sophie McShera portrayed Daisy Parker, a cook’s helper.

Following the series’ conclusion in 2015, McShera appeared in Cinderella as Drizella Tremaine. In 2020, she additionally made an appearance as Miss Graham in a few episodes of The Queen’s Gambit.

13. Allen Leech as Tom Branson
