After being brought to hospital in 2015 with frightening symptoms of abuse from his birth parents Jody Simpson and Tony Smith, Tony, from West Malling, Kent, had suffered major life-threatening injuries.

Tony’s injuries were attributed to a “horrible accident” by his parents, but it was evident that they would be life-altering.

His physicians are reportedly not optimistic that he would survive the trauma.

The couple was arrested and taken to Maidstone Magistrates Court, where they denied causing or permitting serious physical harm to a child and cruelty to a person under the age of 16.

In 2018, Smith and Simpson were found guilty of assaulting, mistreating, and neglecting Tony Hudgell.

After the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts in less than an hour, they were each sentenced to ten years in jail, followed by the maximum penalty.

Tony Hudgell was gravely crippled as a result of his parents’ attack while he was a child, and both of his legs were amputated.

What injuries did Tony Hudgell sustain?

Tony was only 41 days old when he was rushed to the hospital with a chronically dislocated left hip, arthritis, hearing, and infections.

Tony was on the verge of death by the time the GP saw him, and he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

The infant had become grey, had froth at the sides of his mouth, and his legs were swelled and rigid by the time he arrived at the hospital.

He experienced multiple organ failure, septicaemia, toxic shock syndrome, and fractures in both thighs, lower legs, ankles, toes, and thumbs, according to the doctors.

He also had a brain tumour and was put on life support.

His biological parents were said to have swung him about by the legs so forcefully that they were fractured in eight places.

Because of his injuries, he will require prosthetic legs for the rest of his life and will be half deaf.

Where is Tony Hudgell living currently?

Tony was adopted by Paula and Mark Hudgell at the age of four months, shortly after he was released from the hospital in February 2015.

Paula remembered the first time she met Tony as follows: “In front of me stood a four-month-old baby who was broken, shut down, underweight, and had his legs in plaster.

“I burst into tears. I sobbed uncontrollably. ‘I can’t do this,’ I thought. But after only two hours with him, I realised there was no way I could leave him.

“He quickly settled there, and he was smiling away within a week.”

The Crown Prosecution Service informed Paula that they would not be charging his birth parents due to a lack of evidence and an inability to determine which parent caused the injuries.

She went on to gather evidence and file an appeal against the ruling.

“I started to think about the children who die without someone fighting for them, or the children who are not adopted and have no one on their side,” she explained.

The family initiated a campaign to increase the maximum sentence for child cruelty, and Tony’s Law was passed, bringing the maximum sentence for child abuse to life in prison.

Tony has subsequently learned to walk on his new prosthetic legs and has even completed a 10-kilometer walk to raise funds for the NHS, raising £1.3 million.

Celebrities such as Ant and Dec have praised him, and he has even featured on This Morning.

He even won a Pride of Britain award for his efforts.
