BBC Sport confirmed John’s passing with this statement: “Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring in 2018. Affectionately known as ‘Motty’, he had worked on Match of the Day since 1971 and commented on nearly 2500 televised games.”

Born John Walker Motson on July 10, 1945 in Salford, Lancashire, England; Motson began his professional life at age 17 after growing up with family in Salford England.

He was the son of a Methodist minister and received his education at Culford School near Bury St Edmunds.

In 1963 he began working in journalism as a reporter in Barnet before moving onto The Sheffield Morning Telegraph where he covered football matches. In 1968 he was hired by BBC Radio 2 as a sports presenter.

John Motson made his first commentary for Everton against Derby County in December 1969, and throughout his entire career he earned immense respect and love from both colleagues and the community where he worked.

John and Anne lived in Little Brickhill, Buckinghamshire but had yet to announce funeral or obituary arrangements. John will always be remembered as a great man; please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
