Is It Necessary To Protect Your iPhone 12 With A Waterproof Case?

Is The Iphone 12 Waterproof : Another year, another new iPhone collection. Another year of wondering whether Apple’s claims about the new iPhones’ water resistance imply you won’t need a waterproof case.

Apple is emphasising the new iPhone 12 series’ water resistance, like it did with the iPhone 11 last year, with shots of the smartphones being splashed.

Water resistant and waterproof, on the other hand, are not the same thing.

After Apple was punished by an Italian court, even water resistance claims are being scrutinised – more on that later.

What Apple Has to Say About Water Resistance on the iPhone 12 Series

Apple has clarified what it means when it says “even better spill and splash resistance.”

Apple claims that:

“The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are splash, water, and dust resistant, with an IP68 rating under IEC standard 60529, and were tested under controlled laboratory circumstances (maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes).

Splash, water, and dust resistance are not always present, and resistance may deteriorate over time as a result of normal use.

Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; instead, follow the cleaning and drying procedures in the user handbook.

“Warranty does not cover liquid damage.”

For the iPhone 12 Pro versions, the same promise is made.

While this may appear to signal that you may securely grab your iPhone 12, jump into a pool, and utilise its camera to take some fantastic underwater shots, you should reconsider.

The terms “tested under controlled laboratory circumstances” and “liquid damage not covered under warranty” are particularly striking in that legalese.

What Does Apple Have to Say About Water Damage?

Apple offers a support website dedicated to the subject of iPhone water resistance.

More information can be found here. If you want to avoid water damage on your iPhone 12, Apple recommends avoiding the following activities:

With your iPhone, you may go swimming or bathing.

Showering, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, jet skiing, and other activities that expose your iPhone to pressurised or high-velocity water

In a sauna or steam room, using your iPhone

Submerging your iPhone in water on purpose

Using your iPhone in temperatures outside of the recommended ranges or in excessively humid situations

Dropping your iPhone or exposing it to various types of damage

Taking apart your iPhone, including the removal of screws

Apple has been fined by an Italian court for making claims about the iPhone’s water resistance.

This problem was recently in the headlines after an Italian court fined Apple €10 million (about $12 million) for making false claims regarding the iPhone’s water resistance.

Apple misled customers by conducting tests exclusively in laboratory conditions with pure water rather than in real-life scenarios, according to the court.

The business was also deemed to be “aggressive” in charging for water damage in iPhones that were still under warranty, according to the court.

To put it another way, if Apple determines that your iPhone 12 was harmed by water, expect to pay anywhere between $399 (iPhone 12 Mini) and $599 (iPhone 12 Pro Max) for repairs…

Is a Waterproof Case for Your iPhone 12 Necessary?

The iPhone 12 series’ IP68 water resistance rating should be sufficient for everyday use, even if you are caught in a rain shower.

I’d still use a protective case to protect against bumps and falls, and most of them will assist with water resistance by covering the buttons.

However, if you intend to use your iPhone 12 for underwater photography or if you plan to engage in an activity in which it may be submerged (such as boating), I would strongly recommend investing in a waterproof cover.
