Plot Summary
Charlie, an ambitious fashion designer from Venice Beach, California meets Kevin, an established doctor. At first she suspects Kevin of being Gay due to information provided by Fiona about him; but after Kevin asked Charlie out on a date it gave Charlie hope of finding “The One.”
Things begin to unravel quickly when Kevin introduces his mother Viola – an accomplished former newscaster-turned talk host recently replaced by someone younger – to Charlie. Viola quickly dislikes Charlie upon meeting her; when Kevin proposes, Viola becomes even more upset, fearful that both of her sons could also be lost to someone younger; Viola quickly dislikes Charlie but becomes distraught when Kevin proposes and fears losing both sons as well as career; in her distress she turns to Ruby and Fiona for help to break up their relationship and break it apart.
At the engagement party, Viola and Fiona planned for Fiona kissing Kevin as he dressed in his room, upsetting Charlie who felt out of place in Kevin’s world – as planned by Viola and Fiona. To drive Charlie further mad with her antics Viola pretended she had experienced an anxiety attack while Kevin attended a medical conference; hoping her antics would further upset Charlie as planned by Viola. When Charlie realized their plan she took revenge by destroying Viola’s bedroom and switching up antipsychotic medication which had been replaced with vitamin C tablets by Viola before finally confronting Viola to move out permanently.
At her wit’s end, Viola devises a plan to prevent Charlie’s wedding by tricking him into eating nuts during the rehearsal dinner and inducing an allergic reaction which results in his face swelling up severely, only for it to subside by morning. On wedding day itself however, Viola arrives wearing an extravagant white gown instead of the custom peach colored one Charlie had designed specifically for her; leading them into a violent confrontation; she refuses to accept Charlie and declares she will never be good enough for Kevin.
Kevin overhears their argument and realizes just how much Viola has been interfering in his life, prompting him to confront Viola about it and demand she accept or leave Charlie alone; leaving behind his mother to search for Charlie instead. Meanwhile, Ruby confesses to Viola that she had always had feelings for Charlie but wasn’t showing it; telling Viola she needs to let go and find happiness on her own rather than waiting around and waiting around on Kevin alone.
Kevin locates Charlie at the beach where they first met, apologizes for his mother’s behavior and announces to her his intention of marrying her no matter what. Charlie accepts Kevin’s apology and accepts their marriage proposal; both return to their wedding location for exchanging vows and kisses.
Viola arrives late but sees their happiness, realizing she had made mistakes about Charlie which led her to give them another chance; she apologizes to both Charlie and Kevin before reconciling with each of them and giving them her blessing. Finally, Viola announces her landing a job producing talk show talk show production and dating another younger man much to Charlie and Kevin’s amusement. The film ends with Viola’s announcement of landing a producer job on a new talk show as producer while simultaneously dating someone much younger – much to Charlie’s and Kevin’s amusement.
