What is the Difference Between a Bedroom Chest and a Dresser?

You may have heard the term bedroom chest and dresser used interchangeably. While they are similar, there is actually a difference between these two furniture pieces. A dresser, which is the shortened version of the original name “dressing table”, is usually hip height, has two columns of large drawers, and is intended to have a mirror placed on the top of it.

Dressers were specifically made only to hold clothing, whereas bedroom chests are slightly more versatile. Chests may feature different-sized drawers, meant for different uses, and are typically taller and narrower than dressers.

Types of Bedroom Chests

1. Vertical Chest

A vertical bedroom chest is the standard type that is most common. This is a tall and narrow chest of drawers typically comprised of three long horizontal drawers on the bottom and two shorter drawers on top. A vertical chest is a great option for small spaces as it takes up less room than a standard horizontal dresser.

2. Bachelor’s Chest

Bachelor’s bedroom chests are smaller than a standard chest. These short and narrow bedroom chests usually have 3 or 4 drawers and store a smaller number of items than a vertical chest. Bachelor’s chests are perfect for rooms with larger closets when minimal folded storage is necessary. Bachelor’s chests can also serve as a big nightstand to optimize storage next to the bed.

3. Lingerie Chest

Lingerie bedroom chests are even taller and thinner than vertical chests. They typically have 5 or 6 drawers, which are quite small. The lingerie chest got its name because it is perfect for storing undergarments. The many small drawers allow you to separate undergarments by type rather than having them all side-by-side. These drawers can also be used for accessories or jewellery

4. Gentlemen’s Chest

A gentlemen’s chest is similar to the vertical bedroom chests. However, the gentlemen’s chest’s defining feature is a large cabinet section on the upper half of the chest. This section was made for efficiently storing men’s clothing like trousers and suits but can be used for any hangable not too long clothing. The gentleman’s chest serves the same purpose as a combination dresser but is taller and thinner, making it great for saving space.
