Jeep’s legendary offroading abilities are combined with plug-in hybrid technology in the Jeep 4xe. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, two electric motors, and a lithium-ion batteries.

Its 17.0-kWh battery can provide 21 miles of range on a single charge, while the EPA rates it at 20 mpg in combined city/highway fuel economy.

The powertrain

There are many different engine options available to Wrangler shoppers today. There are currently a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a diesel-powered V6, a 6.4-liter SRT 8 and a Plug-in Hybrid.

Jeep is also rolling out a special edition Rubicon 4xe with a half-inch suspension lift, water fording capabilities, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. Its powertrain is similar to that of the regular Rubicon: full-time four-wheel drive, Dana 44 axles, electronic lockers, and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The PHEV powertrain is comprised of two electric motors: one attached to the gasoline engine and the other built into the 8-speed transmission. The front motor operates in two ways: first, it can be driven by the engine to generate electricity, like an alternator; and second, it can apply additional power to the drivetrain when needed.

Performance

Jeep 4xe, the first hybrid plug-in off-road vehicle is a plug-in Jeep 4xe. The Jeep 4xe features a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and electric motors. A battery pack is included to provide 375 horsepower, 470 pound-feet, and torque.

A standard 8-speed manual transmission is used to pair the powertrain with the transfer case, which allows for either rear-wheel or all-wheel driving. During normal driving, the 4xe’s electric motors are used to maximize fuel efficiency, while a drive mode that remaps the accelerator pedal will let you switch to driving with just gas power.

In addition, this model has front and rear Tru-Lok electronic-locking differentials and a Selec-Speed system to handle low-speed off-road terrain. Trail Rated trims can be ordered with Dana 44 axles and rock rails for tough terrain or weather conditions.

Off-Road Capabilities

If you’re looking for a vehicle with nimble off-road capability and excellent quietness, the jeep 4xe is a great choice. This electric-hybrid powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric generators, providing instant torque availability when needed and smooth acceleration on the road.

With 470 lb-ft of torque, the 4xe offers plenty of muscle to climb boulder-strewn trails and get up muddy hill climbs. It also has heavy-duty solid axles, locking differentials, and a two-speed transfer case for handling tough off-road terrain.

Jeep also includes a number of driver aids, including blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert. These make the 4xe safer on paved roads, too.

Interior

The 4xe is one of the first mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs to hit the market. It uses two electric motors and a battery stashed under the rear seats to power the four-wheel drive system.

It also has three driving modes — Hybrid, Electric and eSave. This mode is not available on the V8, but it keeps the Jeep in the EV mode when it’s on the highway.

You’ll notice a few physical differences in the interior of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. There are light bars that indicate how full the battery is and how much power it has left. The 4xe also features PHEV-specific buttons on the steering wheel and below the touchscreen.
