Homicides in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Homicides in California have increased in the past year, as did other violent crimesand this was despite growing frustrations in the state’s most powerful Democrats are trying to retain their positions in the upcoming elections.

The State Department of Justice released its annual crime statistics on Thursday, which showed an increase in the number of violent crimes and property crimes in 2021, even though the overall arrest rate fell.

Californians throughout all of the state are bombarded with news stories about the rise of crimes in recent months from a rash of car break-ins and the use of drugs in San Francisco’s notorious Tenderloin area to illegal street races and takeovers over the brand new $588-million bridge that is being constructed located in Los Angeles.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta are among the Democrats who will be facing opposition in November.

They are unable to articulate the ways in which their policies keep the state in good shape. The progressive San Francisco district attorney was removed from his position in June, while his counterpart in LA has just survived the second attempt to recall him.

“We all recognize that the shootings that are ravaging communities across America is deplorable and inhumane,” Bonta said Monday without commenting on the rise in violence and homicides in the reports of his office.

Bonta is in San Diego Monday to tout the state’s strict laws on gun control that he claims keep homicides from getting higher. He said California’s gun laws are in stark contrast against those of red states such as Florida and Texas — which are also the favorite targets for Newsom.

There were 236 homicides across the state of California this year, exceeding 2020’s number by more than 150 deaths, according to reports. However, the number is far from the historical high409 homicides were reported in 1993 the year before was the deadliest since 2007.

The rate of violent crime went up from 437 for every 100,000 residents at the end of 2020 and reached 466.2 per 100,000 by 2021. The rate of property crime climbed up 3% by 2021 following a record lowest in the year 2020.

In the meantime, the overall arrest rate decreased between 2,812.3 per 100,000 inhabitants at the time of 2020 and 2,606.3 per 100,000 by 2021 — which is part of a trend downward from 2004.
