The gas, when it interacts with air, produces blue flames, which can shoot up to 5 meters.
Ijen Plateau is a dream destination if you like rough terrains and daunting hiking experience. Ijen is an active volcano but seldom erupts. The region is dotted with three volcanic cones; Ijen, Merapi, and Raung. It takes around one or one and a half hours to reach the crater rim. To go to the bottom of Ijen Plateau to watch the spectacular blue flames, you must wear gas masks to protect the lungs from toxic sulfur gas. Even if you wear the mask, you can smell the strong odor and feel irritation in your eyes. It takes around 45 minutes from top to bottom and, at the same time returning to the starting point.
Jagir waterfall
During the return journey from Ijen Plateau to Banyuwangi, visit Jagir waterfall, which is not only an impressive waterfall, but you can take a bath to relinquish all the tiredness. There are twin waterfalls in the region, a stunning place to wet your feet. There is also a hidden waterfall, Ketegan, which is only reachable in dry seasons from Jagir. It is around 150meters away from the main waterfall, and the path is on the river bed.
