Many Scientists have discovered a hot, metallic, Earth-sized planet orbiting a dwarf star which is locating 260 million light-years away.
Naming K2-229b, the planet is almost 20 percent larger than the Earth but has a mass which is over two-and-a-half times greater. It is reaching a dayside temperature of over 2000 degrees Celsius.
It is locating very close to its host star that is 0.012 AU, around a hundredth of the distance between the Earth and the Sun, which itself is a medium-sized active K dwarf in the Virgo Constellation. K2-229b orbits star every fourteen hours.
The K2 telescope, researchers from the Aix-Marseille Universite in a France and the University of Warwick in the UK were employing the Doppler spectroscopy technique which is also known as the ‘wobble method’ that is to discover and characterize this far away from the planet.
The astronomers know the planet is there due to a dip in the light from its host star as it orbits, periodically blocking starlight.
They are then calculating the size, position and mass of the K2-229b through measuring the radial velocity of the star, and finding out that how much the starlight ‘wobbles’ during an orbit, due to the gravitational force from the planet, which is changes depending on the planet’s size.
The Mercury is standing out from the other Solar System terrestrial planets, showing a very high fraction of the iron and implying it to forming differently. Says David Armstrong from the University of Warwick.
We were surprised to see an exoplanet with the same high density, showing that the Mercury-like planets are perhaps not as rare as we think.
Interestingly K2-229b is also the innermost planet in a system of at least a three globes, though all the three orbit much closer to their star than the Mercury.
The dense, metallic nature of the K2-229b has many potential origins, and one hypothesis is that its atmosphere may have to erode through the intense stellar wind and flares, as the planet is so close to its star.
Another possibility is that K2-229b is forming after a massive effect between the two giant astronomical bodies in space billions of years ago that is much like the theory that the Moon is building after the Earth is colliding with a body the size of the Mars.
Discovering of the details about far-flung planets across the universe which is giving us more clues as to how the planets in our solar system are forms say the researchers.
As K2-229b is similar to Mercury, knowing more about the former is potentially revealing more about the latter, they say.
