The Russian embassy in a Washington says on Friday that the new US sanctions are a mistake and a step towards destroying freedom of the business and global economic integration, the Interfax news agency reporting.

Earlier on Friday, Russian regional governor Alexei Dyumin, who was placed on a new US sanctions list, considering the US sanctions against Russia “unfriendly and counterproductive,” Ryumin’s assistant says.

Dyumin, the governor of Tula region, tells Reuters through his assistant that the sanctions will not help in resolving the issues between Washington and Moscow.

The United States is imposing sanctions against Russian businesspeople, companies and government officials, striking at the associate of President Vladimir Putin in one of Washington’s most aggressive moves to punish Moscow for a range of activities that including alleged meddling in the year 2016 US election.

The action which is taking under pressure from the US Congress freezes the US assets of “oligarchs” such as aluminum tycoon Oleg Deripaska and lawmaker Suleiman Kerimov, whose family controls Russia’s largest gold producer, Polyus.

“The Russian government engaging in a range of malign activity around the globe that is including continuing to occupying Crimea and instigate violence in eastern Ukraine. By supplying the Assad regime with the material and weaponry as they bomb their civilians, which is attempting to subvert Western democracies and malicious cyber activities,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin says in a statement.

Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the international affairs committee of Russia’s upper house of the parliament, says the sanctions were baseless and unfriendly, Interfax news agency reporting.

The sanctions are potentially hurt the Russian economy, especially the financial and energy sectors, and are part of Washington’s effort to hold Russia to account for allegedly interfering in the election, which the Moscow denies.

The US intelligence agencies say Russia is used hacking and propaganda in an effort eventually which is aiming at favoring Trump over the Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump denies allegations his election campaign colluding with Moscow.

Donald Trump has faced fierce criticism that is including from fellow Republicans for doing too little to punish Russia for the election meddling, aggression in a Ukraine, and support of the President Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s civil war.

Trump angers many members of the Congress by failing for months to implement sanctions on the Russia that lawmakers were passing nearly unanimously last year.

But pressure for Washington to take action against Russia has mounted in series of disputes reminiscent of Cold War tensions.

Putin’s government blame for the poisoning of a former Russian double agent living in close to U.S. ally Britain last months, and the United States and several European states announce a plan to expelling more than 100 Russian diplomats in response.
