Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party was re-electing this evening for the third successive term with a strong mandate with the preliminary results showing Fidesz to gaining a two-thirds majority in the parliament.

The right-wing nationalist prime minister is projecting himself as a savior of Hungary’s Christian culture against Muslim migration into Europe that is an image that resonates millions of voters, especially in rural areas.

The election is producing a turnout of around 70%, exceeding the past three elections.

According to the preliminary results with 85% of votes counting, National Election Office data projecting Fidesz to win the 133 seats, a two-thirds majority in the 199-seat parliament.

The Nationalist Jobbik was projecting to win 26 seats, while the Socialists were projecting as third with the 20 seats.

Two smaller leftist parties, DK and LMP, won the nine and eight seats respectively.

The victory can embolden Mr. Orban to put a more muscle into a Central European alliance against the European Union’s migration policies.

Mr. Orban, Hungary’s longest-serving post-communist leader, opposes deeper integration of the EU and teaming up with Poland that has a fierce critique of the Brussels’ policies.

With his firm grip on a state media and his business allies in control of the regional newspapers, Mr. Orban’s message was amplifying in the countryside.

Many people there only watch the state television news channel, which has showing immigrants which are causing trouble in the western European cities night after night.

Mr. Orban has far-right admirers across Europe who like his tough line on migrants, and his smooth victory shows that his single-issue campaign, arguing that the migration poses a security threat, has to pay off.

Critics say Mr. Orban has put Hungary on an increasingly absolute path and his stance on the immigration that has fuelled xenophobia.
