Eating at the restaurants and fast food chains may increase the exposure to potentially harmful hormone-disrupting chemicals which is used to improve the flexibility and durability of the plastic, a study has found.

The scientists are analyzing data from the US National Health and a Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collecting between the year of 2005 and 2014.
A total of around 10,253 people were asked to recall what they eat and where their food comes from over the previous 24 hours. The Levels of a phthalate biomarker were measuring in each participant’s urine.
Of the whole group, 61% is reporting dining out the previous day. The association between phthalate exposure and dining out is significant across all the age groups but exceptionally strong for the young people, say the researchers.
The findings are reporting in the journal Environment International.
Lead author Dr. Julia Varshavsky, from the University of California at Berkeley, says “Pregnant women, children, and teenagers are more attaching to the toxic effects of the hormone-disrupting chemicals, so it is essential to find the ways to limit their exposures.
“The Future studies should investigate the most effective interventions to remove the phthalates from the food supply.”
