Eating at the restaurants and fast food chains may increase the exposure to potentially harmful hormone-disrupting chemicals which is used to improve the flexibility and durability of the plastic, a study has found.

The Researchers investigating the levels of phthalates in the human body, which have to link to asthma, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes and a fertility issues in the past few years, were found nearly 35% higher in the participants who have eating out the previous day compared with that who is staying at home.

The Phthalates are binding agents frequently used in a food packaging as well as a number of the other products including flooring, adhesives soaps and shampoos and some forms of the chemical that have banned from the children’s products in the US.

Certain foods, including burgers and sandwiches, are linked to higher phthalate levels in the study, but only they are purchasing at a fast-food outlet, restaurant or cafe.

The association is authoritative for the teenagers, the researchers found. The Adolescents who frequently ate at the fast-food outlets while out with their friends and has 55% higher levels of the chemicals than the young people eating at home.

Researcher Dr. Ami Zota, from a George Washington University in the Washington DC, says “This study is suggesting food which is preparing at home is less likely to contain high levels of phthalates, chemicals linking to the fertility problems, pregnancy complications and on the other health issues.

Our findings suggesting that dining out may be an important, and previously under recognizing, the source of the exposure to phthalates for the US population.

The scientists are analyzing data from the US National Health and a Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collecting between the year of 2005 and 2014.

A total of around 10,253 people were asked to recall what they eat and where their food comes from over the previous 24 hours. The Levels of a phthalate biomarker were measuring in each participant’s urine.

Of the whole group, 61% is reporting dining out the previous day. The association between phthalate exposure and dining out is significant across all the age groups but exceptionally strong for the young people, say the researchers.

The findings are reporting in the journal Environment International.

Lead author Dr. Julia Varshavsky, from the University of California at Berkeley, says “Pregnant women, children, and teenagers are more attaching to the toxic effects of the hormone-disrupting chemicals, so it is essential to find the ways to limit their exposures.

“The Future studies should investigate the most effective interventions to remove the phthalates from the food supply.”
